October General Conference - 2013

October 5-6, 2013

Every so often the mission trades old cars for new cars.  It's a process that is currently going on.  We had a car in Sardegna that needs to be retired and returned to Rome.  Since we were going to Sardegna for Zone Conference anyway, we said we'd get the car and bring it back.  It sounds like a very simple process except that Sardegna is an island so we brought the car back to the mainland by ferry.  We flew into the airport in Olbia and met with the elders there who had the car.  We inspected their apartment and then drove them and the car to Sassari where we met with the missionaries there and then attended the broadcast of conference at the church with them.  The next morning we listened to the priesthood session that had been recorded during the night.  After watching conference in Sassari, we took the same two elders in the car with us and drove to Cagliari and that evening listened to the Sunday morning session with the missionaries serving there.  Because of the time difference, it's challenging to watch all the sessions.  Most of the wards and branches will play the recorded sessions of conference at a later date.  We didn't have many problems in Sassari, but in Cagliari we had problems with the internet connection.  In the end, we watched conference on President Waddoups' iPhone.  (Mainly we just listened because it wasn't big enough for all of us to see.)  The following day we drove to Oristano and did an exchange with the elders there and then returned to Cagliari and did an exchange with a couple of the sisters serving in Cagliari.

One of the older ladies we visited told us how she was afraid of black cats because somebody knew somebody who saw a black cat once and then some really bad things happened.  When the cat died, they skinned the cat and it had a black cross on it's back.  This little lady was really superstitious.  I've heard that story lots of times before, but it was usually associated with Halloween.  This lady loves the sister missionaries, but may not be a viable candidate for baptism.

The following night we did a scambio with the other two sisters serving in Cagliari.  We went to a park with them and talked to people there.  They passed out several pass-a-long cards and even gave out a Book of Mormon.  We've been told it usually takes 6 or 7 contacts with the church before most people really get interested.  Every conversation we have plants a seed.
