Deruta, Italy

January 5, 2015

We have a senior couple who arrived in Italy during a time when we were extremely busy and we hadn't had much time to get to know them.  Right now we have a couple of days where we can do some catch up so we invited them to spend a day with us.

We drove to a little town north of Rome called Deruta.  Deruta is famous for it's pottery.  There is a church there called Santuario Madonna dei Bagni that is filled with pottery plaques that tell a story about miracles that occurred.

We also visited a pottery shop that has a furnace (fornace) that was used during Etruscan times to fire bricks.  It's about 2000 years old.  The current pottery shop was built in the 1700's and was built above the existing furnace.
