Leaving a Legacy
August 2015
When missionaries complete their missions, one of the things
they are asked to do is leave a legacy for new missionaries who will be coming
to the mission. They are given a form
that says:
“As you
finish this wonderful chapter of missionary service, you have the chance to
help those that follow. Think back to
the first days of your mission. You were
full of new missionary energy but maybe not quite sure how to use it. Take some time and contemplate about all the
many lessons and great experiences that you experienced during these two years
of service. What knowledge would you
have wanted in order to enhance your experiences? What great tips of obedience or endurance
would you like the next generation to know?
Now is your chance. Please write
a short letter speaking to all those that will follow.”
With permission from the departing missionaries, here are
some of the comments they made.

Welcome to the
World’s Greatest Mission!
It is very important
to have a personal testimony of each of the principles that we teach.
Obedience brings
blessings. Strict obedience brings
miracles. Don’t let that become your
first priority. Don’t confuse such a
good principle with being a robot without emotion.
Use time wisely. “This life is the time for men to perform
their labors.”
President Uchtdorf said
“Diligently doing the things that matter the most will lead us to the Savior of
the world.”
It will be
important for you to know who you are.
Think about it. Ponder about
it. Pray and study the scriptures
looking for that answer. The better you
understand that, the better you will be at helping others understand their
divine heritage and who they really are.
Obedience
brings blessings. Maybe not baptisms all
the time (even if lots of the time it does) but it will always bring you the
Spirit and every day you can go to sleep knowing that you did the Lord’s will
that day.
If you ever feel
like crying, cry unto the Lord and He will bless you beyond belief.
Have faith in the Enabling
Power of the Atonement. It will lift you
to do things you could never have imagined to have done.
You will never
make a mistake without the spirit first warning you of it so be aware of the
spirit at all times.
