We've driven through the town of Massafra every six weeks for two years and noticed the castle on the hill each time. It's just outside Taranto as we drive towards Bari. This time we had an extra half hour to spare and decided to drive to it. It's ferrogosta (summer vacation) and it was closed, but it was fun to see the outside and drive through centro (city center) on the way.

MASSAFRA
Situated on the Murgia plateau of Taranto, Massafra is also known by the name of Tebaide d’Italia, due to numerous Rupestrian settlements present in the Karst formation caves throughout the territory. Its territory was inhabited since Neolithic times.
