Fear Not
Each
missionary at the completion of his/her mission is given a form to fill out
entitled “Leaving a Legacy”. One of the missionaries who returned home in
July put this on his form:
“DO NOT HAVE
FEAR! Push the limits of your capacity
to serve, and have faith to do more.”
It is great advice. There have been many talks given on the topic
of fear.
President Uchtdorf said “As you dedicate your work and will to Him
and put your worries and fears in His hands, He will make you a great and
fearless witness of Him, of His gospel, and of His Church. He will make you great missionaries.
President Uchtdorf also said “While serving
with the mortal Christ, Peter displayed both boldness and fear. Such could also
be said of the missionaries serving today across the globe. It was Peter who,
following his Master’s lead, walked on water. And it was Peter who became
frightened by the boisterous wind and began to sink, crying out, “Lord, save
me.”
“The Lord did save him, and as Peter followed Jesus he
continued to show remarkable courage, mixed with a good measure of human
weakness. He was always willing to take risks, to open his mouth and say what
was in his heart. At times this led to blunders, but more often it led to
precious learning experiences not available to those who held back….”
“As you dedicate your work and will to Him and put your
worries and fears in His hands, He will make you a great and fearless witness
of Him, of His gospel, and of His Church.
He will make you great missionaries.”
In Doctrine and
Covenants 6:33-34, 36 we read “Fear not
to do good, my sons, for whatsoever you sow, that shall ye also reap….Fear not,
little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are
built upon my rock, they cannot prevail….Look unto me in every thought; doubt
not, fear not.”
President
Gordon B. Hinckley said “When
I went on a mission, my father gave me a little card with a verse from the New
Testament, the words of the Lord to the centurion servant who brought news
concerning the little daughter of the centurion. Those words, 'be not afraid,
only believe.' I commend those words to each of us, my brothers and sisters.
You do not need to fear if you are on the side of right.”
To quote John A. Widtsoe
“Fear is the devil’s first and chief
tool.”
Dorothy Bernard
stated “Courage is fear that has said its
prayers.”
Nelson Mandela taught “I learned that courage was not the
absence of fear, but the triumph over it.
The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers
that fear.”
President Thomas S.
Monson admonishes each of us “Though the storm clouds may gather, though the rains may pour down
upon us, our knowledge of the gospel and our love of our Heavenly Father and of
our Savior will comfort and sustain us and bring joy to our hearts as we walk
uprightly and keep the commandments. There will be nothing in this world
that can defeat us… Fear Not. Be of good cheer. The future is as
bright as your faith.”
President Joseph Smith promised “We have nothing to fear if we are faithful.”
Our counsel to each of you is:
“It is time to put fear behind you and
faith in front of you.”
