Eagle Scout Project

November 2, 2013

One of the scouts who lives on the Naval Support Station in Gricignano, Italy did an Eagle Scout project that involved cleaning up an ancient tomb site on the base.  The land was supposed to have housing for the base on it, but when they were digging for the footings they uncovered a group of ancient tombs.  Construction was stopped and the area is now considered an historical site.  The tombs contained the remains of whoever was buried there along with their prized possessions.  The artifacts have been recovered and taken to a museum, but the burial sites still remain.  Over time they have been partially filled in and covered with moss.  The scouts are working to clean up the site and remove the moss and derby.  We visited the base and the service project with one of the senior couples who serve on the base.
