"Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know
to refuse the evil and to choose the good."
2 Nephi 17:15
One night President and I were reading in the Book of Mormon and came across this verse. It had special significance to us at the time because the mission had been experiencing some real challenges and we do everything we can to keep our missionaries safe from harm and from evil. We also liked it because it refers to honey, which is made from bees, and the theme of our mission is "Bee the best you can bee!" The chapter is quoting from Isaiah and talks about the birth of Christ and how he will eat butter and honey so he will refuse evil and choose good. That's what we desire our missionaries to do. We found some small jars of honey and are giving each missionary one at zone conference. They had a record month of baptisms in March and we wanted to reward them for their efforts. The jar of honey filled two purposes. First, it was a special treat for "being the best" in baptisms. Second, we hope each time they eat honey or even see a jar of honey, they will be reminded how good they are and how sweet is the reward for doing the Lord's work and being his missionaries. We hope each time they see a bee for the rest of their lives they will remember the importance of working hard and working together to further the Lord's purpose here on earth. We hope they will remember how sweet the honey is and that it takes a lot of effort to produce such a small jar of honey, but the effort is worth it. We hope the sight of honey and bees will remind them of their missions and bring back good memories and inspire them to work hard. We hope these two things will inspire them to "Bee the best they can bee!"

I saw wrappers from smarties. Could those be the ones I brought to you?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea with the honey. I think you are "Being the Best" Mission President!
