Trulli

May 28, 2014

While Michael was doing interviews and scambios with the elders, I went with the senior couple who was with us on this trip to see some of the sights since they have never been to Bari and probably will never make it back there again.  We visited the little town of Alberobello just outside Bari.  It is famous for it's trulli homes.

The History of Alberobello's Trulli

Alberobello - Ingresso di un trulloThe first  trulli appeared in the prehistoric age.The oldest trulli known today are located in  Alberobello, Italy and date back to the 14th Century. It was during this period that what was only an uninhabited forrest was assigned to the ownership of the first Count of Conversano.  The tract of land was given as a reward to the young Anjou noble for his service during the Crusades.

There are many theories behind the origin of the trulli. One of the more popular theories is that due to high taxation on property the people of Puglia created dry wall constructions so that they could be dismantled when inspectors were in the area.

The rural trulli, on cheaper land, ceased to be built when the cost of labor began to rise in the twentieth century. The sheer expense of handling the hundreds of tons necessary for a single house became prohibitive.

The city derived its name from the Latin phrase silva arboris belli, that is “wood of the tree of war.”

I bought a Christmas ornament for my "Travel Tree" and a Nativity set for my collection.
