Goodbye, Sweet Friends

September 17, 2013

One of our senior couples successfully completed their mission and returned to Utah today.  It is a tradition that the last night of a mission is spent at the Villa where we have dinner and a testimony meeting.  With senior couples, the procedure is a little different because they don't come the same time the other missionaries do and so they don't leave at the same time either.  This is the first time we have had a senior couple go home.  We planned on having them stay here at the villa in a special guest room (not one of the rooms packed with bunk beds).  That worked out fine.  We had also planned to prepare a dinner and have the other senior couples serving in Rome attend.  Unfortunately, my oven doesn't work, and everything I had planned needed an oven.  Scratch that idea.  We finally decided to just go out to dinner.  It's a good thing we planned it that way because we were told some workers were going to come and do some repairs on the villa.  We thought they were just going to fix the blinds and put some putty in a hole in the wood floor in the main dining room.  Boy was I wrong.  They didn't just fix the hole in the floor, they are in the process of totally refinishing the floor.  They hauled the hutches, dining room table and chairs and everything else in the room into the living room and the other dining room.  We would have had no place to eat even if we had planned to eat here.  As it was, we didn't have a decent place for anyone to sit down for a final testimony meeting after dinner.  We didn't let a little thing like that deter us.  We crowded everybody around the table in the second dining room with all the things piled in there from the main dining room.  It was a very memorable testimony meeting.

We got up at 4:00 am and drove them to the airport that's an hour drive from Rome.
