Maria got baptized Saturday night. She is in the Roma 2 Ward that is considered our home ward even though we won't be able to attend there very often. Michael had to fly to Catanzaro to set a sister apart who is leaving on a mission to England. (As Mission President and District President, he has lots of varied responsibilities.) I stayed behind and went to Maria's baptism.
Maria's older sister, Sallie, got baptized the first day we were in Italy. Maria is very, very shy. At first the elder's were teaching her, but she was too shy to respond to them, so the sister's took over and she responded much better to them. Neither of the girls speak Italian because they are originally from someplace in Africa (I think). Their mother passed away and they have come to Italy to live with their father who is a member of the church. Sallie spoke at Maria's baptism. It was pretty amazing. After the baptism Maria bore a sweet, tender testimony.
The two sister's responsible for her baptism are amazing sisters. They invited a family to come and watch the baptism and then arranged for a potluck dinner in the basement in the kitchen. They arranged to have a member family there to meet them and befriend them. Interestingly, the family who was supposed to come didn't show up, but another family of four did (mother, father, teenage boy and young daughter). These two sister missionaries are great.
The elder's also brought a young man with them, Robert, who is blind. He has been to church with them a couple of times and they are so good to him. It melts my heart to see how they take care of him. I've never seen his mother with him, but wish she could see how wonderful this is for her son. It would touch her heart, too.
